Five things to know before you vote on the school sales tax

Adams County ballot question, November 3, 2026. Vote NO.

It's about $12 million a year in new taxes.By the campaign's own estimate. Not a replacement for anything. Layered on top of every property and sales tax you already pay.

It never ends.The ballot question has no expiration date and the state law behind it doesn't require one. It stays until voters go back to the ballot to remove it.

It can't pay teachers.By law the money is restricted to buildings, resource officers and counselors. The "keep our teachers" promise is being made with money that can't legally keep them.

The "60% paid by visitors" claim has no study behind it.The only source we've found is the school district. Regional shopping towns typically pull 25 to 40% from outsiders. If the 60% is off, the local cost roughly doubles.

It's a Quincy tax.Quincy School District 172 takes 71 cents of every dollar. Camp Point, Liberty, Mendon and Payson can ask their own voters for what their own buildings need.

Teachers and staff should be fairly compensated.This tax can't pay them, but it does add 1% to every gallon of gas. Before anything touches a classroom, examine administration and overhead first. A NO vote says: show the work, then ask.
